Hit and run: where the money comes from
Short answer
Where the at-fault driver is unknown or uninsured, compensation is sought under your casco policy if you have one, or from the Guarantee Fund under the conditions set out in the Insurance Code.
First: document that it was an accident
Without a document the case stays "damage of unknown origin", which is a different category. Notifying the authorities on the spot and the document issued are the basis of the whole file — photographs alone do not replace an official record.
If you have casco
The claim goes through casco in the usual way. What matters here is the deductible and how the event affects your future premium — together they sometimes make a small claim cheaper to pay out of pocket.
If you do not have casco
Then the route is the Guarantee Fund, which covers damage caused by an unknown or uninsured vehicle under the conditions and scope set by law. The conditions for property damage are not the same as for bodily injury — the specific case is checked against the statutory text.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it worth claiming a small amount on casco?
- The calculation uses three figures: repair cost, deductible and the effect on the next premium. Sometimes the answer is not to claim.
- What if the driver is identified later?
- Their liability is then pursued in the ordinary way, and the insurer that paid has its own rights against them.
